Family Care
We Advocate for Families in NICU
Every parent deserves to be given the knowledge, confidence, and support to advocate for their baby in the NICU. Through education, guidance, and practical tips, we help families feel empowered during this critical time.

Be Proactive. Educate Yourself. Protect Your Baby.
Here’s what to do if you find yourself in the NICU for signs and symptoms of NEC:
1. Ask Questions About Every Procedure and Treatment
No question is too small. Understanding each step of your baby’s care helps you feel informed and confident.
2. Request Clear Explanations About Your Baby’s Diagnosis
Ask for information in plain language. It’s your right to know what’s happening and why.
3. Take Notes, and/or Record Important Conversations (With Permission)
Keep track of medical updates, instructions, and questions so you can review them later and share with family members.
4. Request Your Baby’s Baseline Vitals and Progress Daily
Understanding your baby’s normal readings helps you notice changes and communicate effectively with the care team.
5. Speak Up if You Notice Changes in Your Baby’s Condition
You know your baby best. Share observations promptly — even small differences can be important.
6. Understand the Risks, Benefits, and Alternatives for Treatments
Ask your care team about options, potential outcomes, and why a treatment is recommended to make informed decisions.
7. Build Relationships With Your Care Team
Nurses, doctors, and specialists are your partners. Strong communication helps your baby receive consistent, compassionate care.
8. Document Your Baby’s Care Across Shifts
Keep a record of feeding times, medications, and procedures to ensure continuity and accuracy in care.
9. Ask for Resources on NEC and NICU Best Practices
Educational materials empower you to make informed choices and understand the condition affecting your baby.
10. Connect With Parent Support Networks
Other parents who’ve been in the NICU can offer guidance, encouragement, and hope during this emotional journey. Join our Facebook group.
